One of the major influences for the layout of my photobook is the original surf magazine, organically named Surfer magazine. It was founded in 1960, during the time surfing was stepping into the realm of professional sports. The man behind the name is John Severson, an artist, filmmaker and of course, surfer. The magazine became a voice to the sport and a stepping stone for other surf magazines to come. In 2020, the company closed its doors on the print world, now just running digitally like much of today's content.
Surfer Magazine dimensions: 236 x 311.15mm

Layout
The look of the book from cover to back will be simple- one image that wraps over the front and back of the book with the title on the front cover. The inside will look similar to Respondek and Burkard's photobooks, as well as Surfer magazine, where it contains a range of imagery of both color and black & white. The text will include information about Australia's surf culture that acquired in my research and conversations. I plan to follow in Respondek's footsteps in creating a different look on most of the pages- full bleed, multiple frames and various sizes.
This book will be printed at Little Print. The dimensions will be similar to that of the magazine from 200x240mm (Portrait), 32PP, Printed CMYK 2S. The paper chosen is128GSM Silk HD + 250GSM Silk HD Cover + Matt Lam, as this will best match the paper used for magazines. The binding will be perfect bound, just like Respondek's.
My images will be organized to fit the variety of topics below, in this order:
1. Preparation
2. Surveying the waves
3. Paddling Out/ Duck Dive
4. Action – Slow and Sharp
5. Wipe outs
5. Exiting the Sea
6. Reflecting on the Surf
These images will include:
Close up of the action, each subject, the waves and the surfboard
The feelings of the sport– the success and failures.
The change in waves– tranquil to dynamic.
These images below provide an example for the page layouts I am inspired to use in my own book.
